Course Description

This course introduces L3 computer-science students to the technical, social, and political stakes of cybersecurity. It gives enough technical background to reason about common threats while keeping the discussion connected to real systems, privacy issues, and everyday security decisions.

The practical sessions cover security monitoring, OSINT, passwords, password managers, and metadata leakage.

Prerequisites

Basic computer-science knowledge.

Introduction to cybersecurity stakes, attacker goals, risk reasoning, and basic defensive vocabulary.

Privacy and public-policy debates

Privacy threats, surveillance tradeoffs, and structured discussion around encrypted communication.

Cryptography basics

Core cryptographic concepts used to understand confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and secure communication.

Security monitoring and OSINT

Practical work on technology watch, public information collection, and the limits of open-source intelligence.

Passwords and password managers

Password attack models, defensive choices, and practical evaluation of password-manager workflows.

Mobile application metadata

Practical analysis of information exposed by mobile applications and their distribution metadata.
